The Hudson Valley refers to the canyon of the
Hudson River and its adjacent communities in New York State, generally
from northern Westchester County northward to the cities of Albany and
Troy. This site features those towns, artists, people, places, and
history in the Hudson Valley and the Catskills of NY state.
Albany County
Albany County was incorporated in 1683. Situated
on the west bank of the Hudson River, Albany County is approximately
135 miles directly north of New York City and has an area of
approximately 540 square miles.
A number of the State’s institutions of higher
learning are located in the County, among them the State University of
New York at Albany, the Sage College of Albany (a division of The Sage
Colleges), Albany Law School (Union University), Siena College, The
College of St. Rose, Albany Medical College, Albany College of Pharmacy
and three business colleges.
The County’s transportation needs are served by a
network of excellent highways, including the New York State Thruway,
Interstate Highways 90 and 87 and a connecting link to the
Massachusetts Turnpike; major bus lines; three railroads; Albany
International Airport Albany International Airport; the Hudson River;
the New York State Barge Canal and the Port of Albany. The County
contains three cities—Albany, Cohoes and Watervliet—and ten towns. The
cities have well equipped fire and police departments and the towns are
served by many individual fire districts, volunteer fire companies and
town police departments. Educational services for County residents are
provided by private schools, school districts and Hudson Valley
Community College, which is located in a neighboring county.

Columbia County
The first exploration of the territory was most
likely that of Hendrick Hudson who in 1609 sailed across the Atlantic
and up the river which now bears his name. An accident to his craft
forced him to stop and come ashore to visit the area. The native
inhabitants of the region were the Mohican Indians. A lively trade was
established by 1612 and early settlers began to colonize various
regions. The establishments of Fort Orange and New Amsterdam in 1624
allowed traders and travelers to frequently stopped along the shores of
Columbia. Small settlements sprang up to supply goods to these ships.
With the constant changes in present day
technology Columbia County is working diligently to offer you the
ability to acquire pertinent data concerning community as well as
legislative events and information. Today's busy lifestyle has made it

Dutchess County
When Henry Hudson sailed up the Hudson River in
1609, laying claim to the valley for the Dutch Crown, the east bank of
the river had been home for centuries to the Wappinger Indians and
other members of the Algonquin Federation. They called one of their
encampments Poughkeepsie, the reed-covered lodge by the little water
place." Dutchess was named after England's future Queen Mary, not after
the Dutch, who relinquished their claims to the area in 1683.
Dutchess County's history is visible at every
turn. Colonial homesteads, gothic cottages, clapboard farmhouses,
Victorian villas, Beaux Arts mansions, stone churches, country
inns--all stand in silent witness to past lives and events that have
shaped the distinctive character of Dutchess County. High-tech
industries and modern shopping malls have replaced brickyards and
trading posts, but historic resources remain an integral part of the
Dutchess County landscape.

Orange County
Located just 40 miles from Manhattan, Orange
County is one of the most attractive areas in the New York metropolitan
area. Affordable housing, excellent school systems, a low crime rate,
outstanding road, rail and air transportation, lack of congestion, and
a wide range of recreational activities offer unique advantages for
business and for living.
Orange County was established in 1683 as one of
the original counties of the Province of New York.
The county name is derived from King William III
of England who was a Prince of the House of Orange.
The earliest carbon dated human settlement in
North America, over 12,500 years old, is found in Orange County.
Mastodons roamed the same territory and more of their skeletons can be
found here than any place on earth.
Centuries later in 1609 Henry Hudson sailed up our
Hudson River and anchored the "Half Moon" in Cornwall Bay. George
Washington established his longest residency during the Revolutionary
War in Newburgh. It was here that he founded the Order of the Purple
Heart, and in 1850 Washington's Headquarters became the first
Registered National Historic Landmark in the United States.

Rolling mountains, sparkling lakes for swimming, fishing and boating.
Unique historic sites that made important contributions to America's
earliest history. Intriguing museums, landmarks, music and theatre
